International Trade Intern at AFL Global

Overview
From June - August 2025, I completed a 12-week summer internship with AFL Global in Duncan, SC, as an International Trade Intern. AFL is a fiber-optic company owned by Fujikura, a Japanese parent company. During this time, I gained experience in trade compliance in both the imports and exports teams. In this role, I qualified products for USMCA, leading to cost savings. I also assigned proper Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes, Country of Origin, and Export Control Classification numbers to products in Oracle to facilitate shipping processes, auditing shipment records and vendor certificates, and screened orders on hold, all to facilitate shipping processes, contribute to cost savings, and comply with US Customs and Border Protection regulations. In addition to these tasks, I participated in team meetings that assessed the department's progress and changes in trade policy. I presented an overview of my experience and impact to my peers and executives at the end of my internship, showcasing what I learned through using my public speaking skills.
Reflection
Though intimidating at first, I succeeded in my internship with the support of the International Trade team, who worked closely together and fostered a sense of community within the department. In addition, the internship program at AFL provided a support system and community of other interns, where we shared our experiences and even bonded over a game of TopGolf! This internship gave me insights into logistics and supply chain and equipped me with the skills and confidence to continue my career at Clemson and post-grad.
Marketing Intern at the French American Center
Introduction
During my time studying abroad in Montpellier, France, I completed a remote internship alongside an internship class from February to May 2026. My internship consisted of my being a Marketing Intern for the French American Center, working under my supervisor. There were two parts to my internship: one creating marketing content for Au Pair in America, and the other creating language-learning materials for a developing platform.
Au Pair in America Experience
When creating content for Au Pair in America, the additional company where my supervisor worked, I produced video content for prospective applicants about the cultural differences they might encounter in the United States and what to expect during the application process. In addition, I communicated with current Au Pairs in the program to gauge their experiences and create articles for the blog section of the Au Pair in America website.
Language Learning Platform Experience
During my time, my supervisor, who had a passion for language learning and teaching, wanted to launch a digital learning platform for French learners. I helped her launch this platform, targeted for French learners, in my study abroad program. Under her guidance, I helped bring her vision to life by gathering the input of students through surveys and word of mouth to create lessons that were applicable to differing proficiencies and culturally relevant to make language learning fun. One of my favorite lessons I created was on the Passé Composé and Imparfait using the life of Bad Bunny, which was especially relevant at the time because he had just performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. Creating these lessons channeled my French proficiency and creativity.
Internship Course
Simultaneously, I took an internship class in my program, where we discussed our internship experience. In this class, I wrote weekly reports and then a final report to fully process the work I was doing. In addition, we learned about the work culture in France, as well as education and legal systems. This provided context for the environment I was working in, and I also enjoyed hearing about my peers' experiences.
Reflection
What I especially loved about my internship was working with my supervisor, who was from England, to create content tailored for French Au Pair Applicants and American students, fostering a diverse, cross-cultural working environment. Since this internship was remote, my independence and confidence grew significantly, and I greatly enjoyed seeing the impact of my work, knowing it was meaningful. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and work in a different country around a different culture.
